Abstract

While growing evidence suggests sibling aggression is associated with a range of negative developmental outcomes, research examining sibling aggression remains limited. Understanding which acts of aggression are most commonly used among siblings may help identify behaviors that place youth at elevated risk for future emotional, behavioral, and social difficulties. Accordingly, the current study examined item-level frequencies of proactive and reactive sibling aggression in a sample of elementary-aged youth as well as evaluated gender and grade-level differences in acts of sibling aggression. Participants were 290 children (54.8% male) in grades 3 through 5 (Mean age = 9.27, SD = 0.98) who completed a measure assessing aggression toward siblings. Results indicated that sibling reactive aggression was more common than proactive aggression, with the most common act of aggression being getting angry and striking when teased by a sibling. Although proactive aggression was less common, at least one in six youth reported using physical force to dominate siblings. No gender differences emerged and grade-level differences were minimal. The only grade level effect found was that 3rd graders were more likely to endorse threatening or bullying a sibling to get their own way than 5th graders. Overall, findings highlight reactive aggression as a prominent feature of sibling dynamics in late childhood and emphasize the importance of recognizing sibling aggression as a meaningful form of interpersonal aggression rather than a harmless developmental norm.
