イトヨの体側にある骨化した「鱗板」の数が、寒冷環境への適応度に影響するかを、野外に近いメソコスム実験で検証した。研究グループは、鱗板の少ない岐阜県の淡水集団「ハリヨ」と、鱗板の多い北海道太平洋集団を交配した雑種を用い、鱗板数の異なる個体を静岡県三島市と北海道苫小牧市の屋外メソコスムに約5カ月間放流した。その結果、寒冷な苫小牧では生存率が低下し、成長や生殖腺の発達も遅れた。しかし、生き残った個体では、鱗板数と生存・成長・生殖腺発達との間に明確な関連は確認されなかった。したがって今回の条件では、寒冷環境が鱗板数の違いに対して選択圧を与える証拠は得られなかった。鱗板の進化には温度だけでなく、捕食や餌資源など複数の生態的要因が相互作用している可能性が示された。

Abstract

Reduction of lateral plates in the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus Linnaeus, 1758) is a well-known example of parallel evolution. However, the environmental factors driving this variation remain unclear. Sticklebacks with reduced plates tend to occur more frequently in warmer habitats, whereas completely plated populations are more common in colder environments, suggesting a possible role of winter temperature in shaping lateral plate variation. We conducted a mesocosm experiment in two locations with contrasting winter temperatures and associated environmental conditions to examine whether lateral plate number influenced survival, growth, and maturation. Hybrids with varying plate numbers were released into outdoor mesocosms. Survival and growth were substantially reduced in the colder environment, particularly in males, and gonadal development was also delayed. In contrast, no significant difference in lateral plate number was detected between survivors from the two mesocosms, and lateral plate number showed no significant association with growth-related traits or condition factor. In conclusion, we found no detectable evidence that differences in winter environmental conditions generated differential selection on lateral plate number under the conditions of this experiment. Because each temperature treatment was represented by a single mesocosm, we cannot exclude the possibility that site-specific environmental factors contributed to the observed patterns.
