中国科学院昆明植物研究所の研究チームは、植物が蜜の視覚的魅力を高める方法を明らかにしました。南中国のウツギ(Enkianthus quinqueflorus)は、透明な花冠の基部に暗赤色の蜜嚢を持ち、色のない蜜を「色付き」に見せる視覚的錯覚を生み出しています。この構造は、特に鳥類の訪花を促進し、受粉効率を向上させることが確認されました。実験では、黒い背景と透明な液体の組み合わせが「色付きの蜜」の錯覚を効果的に再現できることが示されました。また、ツツジ属37種のデータ解析から、暗色の蜜嚢を持つ種ほど鳥の訪問頻度が高い傾向が見られ、これらの特徴が独立して進化した可能性が示唆されました。この研究は、蜜の視覚的演出が植物の受粉戦略において重要な役割を果たすことを示しています。
