Bats are the second most species-rich mammalian group after rodents and exhibit a wide range of dietary habits ranging from insects and plants to vertebrates (Patterson et al., 2003). Among these, 14 species from the families Phyllostomidae, Megadermatidae, Vespertilionidae, and Nycteridae are known to feed on terrestrial vertebrates through gleaning, with six species regularly or seasonally preying on such animals (Gual-Suárez & Medellín, 2021). More recently, three species of aerial hawking bats from the family Vespertilionidae, which include the birdlike noctule Nyctalus aviator in Japan, have been found to prey on birds during the spring and autumn bird migration periods (Fukui et al., 2013; Ibáñez et al., 2001; Thabah et al., 2007). DNA metabarcoding analyses revealed that these bats preferentially target small migratory birds (Gong et al., 2021; Ibáñez et al., 2016, 2020).
