As the tumour microenvironment shapes therapeutic outcomes, preclinical cancer research should prioritize using intact, patient-derived tumour explants that preserve the tumour architecture, cellular heterogeneity and dynamic crosstalk. Here we call for coordinated, cross-disciplinary and continuous efforts to enable the widespread adoption of tumour explants.
